In a new interview with Rolling Stone, Damon Albarn weighed in on production of the new Gorillaz album. “I’m in the very early days on a new Gorillaz record. So far, it’s really fast, and it’s got quite a lot of energy. I’ve been stuck on piano, somewhere off Broadway, for years now. I want to go somewhere completely opposite of that,” Albarn said.

In a new interview, Jamie Hewlett confirmed work has begun on a new Gorillaz album. The follow-up to 2010’s Plastic Beach is said to be coming out sometime in 2016.

Hewlett, who next month will debut an art exhibition at London’s Saatchi Gallery, spoke with DIY about his musical project with Damon Albarn, telling the outlet this regarding a new Gorillaz LP:

That’s next year. I’m working on it at the moment, and it’s going very well. I’m very excited. I don’t want to say too much about it, but I’m at that phase of experimentation. What I try not to do when I’m working in this creative period, the cooking of the mess, is go to other peoples’ exhibitions and look at other peoples’ work. I close my eyes, and don’t want to know what anyone else is doing. Doing that has kind of ruined the creative process for me in the past, and I don’t want to let that happen again.

In January Hewlett began posting Gorillaz images on on his Instagram account and responded to a fan who asked about a possible comeback with, “Yes. Gorillaz Returns.” In July Albarn further confirmed the band’s return, stating in an interview, “I’m starting recording in September for a new Gorillaz record. I’ve just been really, really busy so I haven’t had a chance. I’d love to just get back into that routine of being at home and coming to the studio five days a week.”

Recently, Hewlett has been using his Instagram account to further share images of the animated band.
