Neil Young dug into his extensive archives for three next installments of his Official Bootleg Series of live recordings. Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971, Royce Hall, 1971 and Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line) arrive May 6th digitally and on CD with vinyl to follow on June 3.
All three live albums feature solo acoustic performances. Dorothy Chandler Pavilion, 1971 documents Young’s February 1, 1971 concert in Los Angeles. Recorded during the last night of Neil’s 1971 solo tour, the LP features 15 songs including “A Man Needs A Maid,” “The Needle And The Damage Done” and preview track “Don’t Let It Bring You Down.”
Royce Hall, 1971 was recorded on January 30, 1971 at Royce Hall on the campus of UCLA in Los Angeles towards the conclusion of Neil Young’s 1971 solo tour. Neil moves between guitar, harmonica and piano throughout the 16-song set. “Journey Through The Past” came out today from the album produced and mixed by The Volume Dealers (Neil Young and Niko Bolas).
Citizen Kane Jr. Blues (Live at The Bottom Line) features a surprise show Neil Young played at the famed New York City venue on May 16, 1974. Young took the stage after a set from Ry Cooder to work through 11 songs, some of which would be included as part of his On The Beach studio album that came out a few months later. Neil shared “Revolution Blues” from the set as a preview.
“The deeply oxidized rusties among you will have heard these shows before–they never sounded this sublime, so I hope you dig them all over again–but what excites me most about this series is the opportunity people will have to sit down with these recordings for the first time,” Neil Young wrote on Neil Young Archives. “No need to dig around seedy corners of the internet or time travel to the kind of bygone record store that might keep this kind of thing under the counter with the other less-than-legal wares.”
