Watch 25-Year-Old Neil Young Perform ‘Heart Of Gold’ At BBC In 1971
The footage comes from the upcoming ‘Harvest’ 50th anniversary expanded box set.
Neil Young was 25 years old when he performed in London at the BBC Radio Theatre on February 23, 1971. Previously unreleased footage of Young’s solo rendition of “Heart Of Gold” that will be included as part of the 50th anniversary expanded reissue of his landmark album, Harvest, can be viewed below.
Young originally released his fourth solo album, Harvest, in early 1972. The LP was recorded by Young with pedal steel guitarist Ben Keith, keyboardist Jack Nitzsche, bassist Tim Drummond and drummer Kenny Buttrey, who were called The Stray Gators. Among the now-classic Young songs on Harvest are “Heart Of Gold,” “Old Man,” “Are You Ready for the Country?,” “The Needle and the Damage Done” and the title track.
Guests included Linda Ronstadt, James Taylor, David Crosby, Stephen Stills, Graham Nash and the London Symphony Orchestra, among others. The 50th Anniversary Edition Box Sets will be available in CD and vinyl formats on December 2. A description of what’s included follows:
Young’s fourth solo album remains one of the most beloved in his catalog and is dense with songs that have long-permeated radio waves. The 50th Anniversary Edition Box Sets will be released December 2, 2022, on Vinyl and CD, boasting the original album, three studio outtakes on CD/7” vinyl, an unreleased live 1971 BBC solo performance on CD, LP and DVD. The film Harvest Time is a previously unseen 2-hour documentary filmed in 1971, documenting the Harvest sessions. Also included in the package is a hardbound book and fold-out poster. The vinyl box sets include a lithograph print.
Fans of the record will receive a new glimpse into Harvest through the two DVDs included in the box set. The first is Harvest Time, an unreleased two-hour film shot during the making of Harvest, with footage from Young’s ‘Harvest Barn’ sessions in Northern California, recording sessions in Nashville and London. The second is a film of the unreleased solo BBC Concert recorded on February 23, 1971. Also included are three unreleased tracks from the original Harvest sessions: “Bad Fog of Loneliness,” “Journey Through The Past,” and “Dance Dance Dance.” Additionally, the hardbound book will include never-before-seen photos along with extensive liner notes by photographer Joel Bernstein.
First broadcast on April 1, 1971, Young’s previously unreleased solo performance for the BBC saw him perform “Heart Of Gold” as well as fellow Harvest tracks “Out On The Weekend,” “Old Man” and “A Man Needs A Maid.” Those were played alongside “Journey Through The Past,” “Don’t Let It Bring You Down,” “Love In Mind” and the Harvest outtake “Dance Dance Dance.”
