Neil Young Fits Rarities Into Solo Tour Closer In Boston

Famed rocker Neil Young concluded his first solo tour since 2014 last night at the Wang Theatre in Boston. Young’s sixth and final show of the run featured four tour debuts including songs he hadn’t performed since 2009 and 2003.

Neil opened Thursday’s performance the way he did each show of the run, with “On The Way Home.” He then reached for the tour debut of “Long May You Run.” Next came “Homefires” ahead of Young’s first “My My, Hey Hey (Out Of The Blue)” since 2015. One of the evening’s biggest surprises followed in the form of “Already One.” Neil hadn’t performed the Comes A Time classic since October 24, 2009. “Only Love Can Break Your Heart” ended a run of six songs with Young on acoustic guitar to start the show.

Young picked up banjo for “Mellow My Mind” and then went electric on the CSNY protest song “Ohio.” A piano section of the concert came next featuring “There’s A World,” “Horseshoe Man,” and “Are You Ready For The Country.” “Horseshoe Man” was last performed way back on May 19, 2003. Boston fans then saw Neil move to pump organ for “After The Gold Rush” before he returned to piano for “Speakin’ Out” and “Tonight’s The Night.”

The evening’s next section saw Neil Young focus on material from 2010’s Le Noise. “Angry World” featured Neil on electric, while Young tackled “Love & War” and “Peaceful Valley Boulevard” on acoustic. Last night’s main set concluded with acoustic versions of “Out On The Weekend,” “The Needle & The Damage Done” and “Heart Of Gold.” As with other shows on the tour, Young encored with “Tumbleweed” played on ukulele.
