Legendary rocker Neil Young has shared details of an upcoming new album EARTH which will be released by Reprise Records on June 17. The album features a collection of live recordings of songs from throughout Young’s career, taped during last year’s Rebel Content Tour with Promise Of The Real.
Composed of tracks originally released on such Young LPs as 1970’s After The Gold Rush, 1974’s On The Beach, 1978’s Comes A Time, 1986’s Landing On Water, 1990’s Ragged Glory, 1994’s Sleeps With Angels and 2015’s The Monsanto Years which also featured POTR and one previously unreleased cut, Young added musical overdubs and sounds of the earth – car horns, insect and animal sounds – to the tracks making up the record. The result is one-continuous recording, described by Young like this:
Ninety-eight uninterrupted minutes long, EARTH flows as a collection of 13 songs from throughout my life, songs I have written about living here on our planet together. Our animal kingdom is well represented in the audience as well, and the animals, insects, birds, and mammals actually take over the performances of the songs at times.
Young will offer the first public playback of EARTH in his Pono high definition fidelity audio format at The Natural History Museum Los Angeles County on Friday, May 6. The “An Evening With Neil Young” event will also feature the musician discussing the creation of the new LP and is being presented as part of the museum’s First Fridays series.
