Neil Young & Crazy Horse will take the stage together next month for their first shows since 2019. When the benefit concerts at The Roxy in Los Angeles on September 20 and 21 were announced the question became who would fill in for Nils Lofgren. The answer was recently given by Neil Young in a reply to a letter to the editor on NeilYoungArchives.com.

Multi-instrumentalist Micah Nelson has been tapped to join Young, drummer Ralph Molina and bassist Billy Talbot at the shows celebrating The Roxy’s 50th anniversary. Regular Crazy Horse guitarist Nils Lofgren, also known for his multi-instrumental prowess, will be busy touring with Bruce Springsteen as a member of the E Street Band.

Micah Nelson has over 100 Neil Young shows under his belt as he toured as part of the Neil Young & Promise Of The Real configuration between 2014 and 2019. The change to the Crazy Horse lineup marks the 11th iteration of the band.

The confirmation came after Neil Young received a letter from a fan offering his services on rhythm guitar for the shows at The Roxy. “Thanks Micah’s got it!,” replied Young.

Rumors that Micah Nelson would cover for Lofgren have been flying since February, when Micah told Austin Lifestyle he “might be going on tour with Neil Young and Crazy Horse this summer.” While Young decided to go it alone for what turned into his Coastal Tour, Neil mentioned the possibility of touring “next year outdoors” in response to another letter to the editor on NeilYoungArchives.com.

If Neil Young tours in 2024 it remains to be seen whether he’ll bring Crazy Horse on the road with him and if Lofgren is available. Nils’ fellow E Streeter Steven Van Zandt addressed the possibility of a 2024 Bruce Springsteen tour earlier this summer on social media.

Registration for tickets to Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s plays at the Roxy is closed. Fans can enter a contest for a chance to win two tickets to six upcoming shows at The Roxy. Proceeds from both Crazy Horse concerts will go towards The Painted Turtle and The Bridge School.

Watch Micah Nelson get ready for his time with Crazy Horse by joining Gov't Mule and Jackie Greene for a cover of Neil Young's “Revolution Blues” at a recent stop on his father Willie Nelson’s Outlaw Music Festival tour at the Riverbend Music Center in Cincinnati.
