While Neil Young and the Chrome Hearts have mostly settled into a regular setlist for their recently launched Love Earth Tour 2025, curveballs can come at any time. Last night, Young kept fans on their toes by opening his concert in Groningen, The Netherlands with his first full-band “Ambulance Blues” since 2016.

Neil Young originally released the song reflecting on the end of the 1960s on his 1974 studio album, On The Beach. He debuted “Ambulance Blues” live the same year and last performed the fan-favorite frequently in 2007 and 2008. The only versions since then came at a private show with Promise Of The Real in January of 2016 and at a solo concert in January of 2019.

“I haven’t played this in like a hundred years, we’ll see what happens,” Young told the crowd after he took the stage. Neil Young had an acoustic guitar in hand as performed “Ambulance Blues” backed by organist Spooner Oldham, Micah Nelson on acoustic guitar and the rhythm section of bassist Corey McCormick and drummer Anthony LoGerfo.

Despite the warning, Neil Young And The Chrome Hearts pulled off a powerful, raw take on “Ambulance Blues” to kick off the Tuesday night show at Groningen’s Summerstage. Young delivered the lyrics with conviction and blew on the harmonica between verses. Oldham added bursts of his signature organ stylings throughout.

Young moved to electric guitar as the concert continued with “Be The Rain.” The rest of the setlist was nearly identical to that of the first six stops of the Love Earth Tour 2025.

Neil Young And The Chrome Hearts played such classics as “Cinnamon Girl,” “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black),” “Harvest Moon” and “Like A Hurricane.” Young went unplugged mid-set for a solo version of “The Needle And The Damage Done.” The legendary musician kept his acoustic guitar handy as The Chrome Hearts returned to augment him on “Harvest Moon” and “Looking Forward.”

The penultimate song of the main set, “Name Of Love,” featured Young on pump organ. “Old Man” closed the frame before Neil Young And The Chrome Hearts punctuated the night with a two-song encore of “Throw Your Hatred Down” and “Rockin’ In The Free World.”
