My Morning Jacket Covers ‘St. Louis Blues’ In St. Louis
Listen to official audio of Jacket’s 21-song Tuesday night concert at Stifel Theatre.
My Morning Jacket used the opportunity of performing at St. Louis’ Stifel Theatre on Tuesday night to debut a geographically-fitting cover. Frontman Jim James delivered a primarily solo acoustic version of W.C. Handy’s “St. Louis Blues” in the Gateway City.
James and bandmates guitarist Carl Broemel, drummer Patrick Hallahan, bassist Tom Blankenship and keyboardist Bo Koster treated St. Louis fans to a 21-song concert at the Stifel on Tuesday. MMJ kicked off the penultimate stop of their fall tour with “At Dawn,” the title track from their 2001 sophomore studio album. The main set in St. Louis also featured At Dawn‘s “The Way That He Sings” and “X-Mas Curtain.”
“St. Louis Blues” was trotted out by James in the seven-slot on Tuesday as a lead in to “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).” My Morning Jacket joins a long and illustrious list of artists who have covered what has been called “the jazzman’s Hamlet” that includes Bessie Smith, Benny Goodman, Count Basie, Bing Crosby and Louis Armstrong.
This fall, Jacket has been celebrating the 20th anniversary of their It Still Moves LP with front-to-back performances of the material on the album at the first night of multi-night runs. MMJ fit “Steam Engine” from the record into their main set in St. Louis and “Mahgeetah” as the finale of a three-song encore that also included “Circuital” and “Gideon.”
