My Morning Jacket kicked off the show by their lonesomes for romps through “Victory Dance,” “First Light,” “The Way That He Sings” and “Evelyn Is Not Real.” Taylor Goldsmith of Dawes was the evening’s first guest and he helped out on “Nothing To It” featuring lyrics from Bob Dylan that he recorded with Jim James as part of The New Basement Tapes projects. “War Begun” was up next after which Ben Bridwell of Band of Horses emerged to sing “Wonderful (The Way I Feel).” Then, Conor Oberst came out for versions of his own “At The Bottom Of Everything” and MMJ’s “I Will Be There When You Die.” One Big Holiday attendees were then treated to a new original, “Only Memories,” followed by the hard-hitting “Lay Low.”
The main set came to a climax when Preservation Hall Jazz Band came out for a four-song string of “Holdin On To Black Metal,” “Highly Suspicious,” “Dancefloors” and a debut cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Happy.” While “Mahgeetah” closed out the main set, there was plenty of insanity left. Last night’s first encore consisted of five cover debuts. First up were takes on The Velvet Underground’s “Sweet Jane” and “Rock & Roll.” From there, Jim James & Co. were joined once again by Preservation Hall Jazz Band for a nod to the ’80s movie Ferris Bueller’s Day Off with debut covers of Wayne Newton’s “Danke Schoen” and Phil Medley/Bert Russell’s “Twist & Shout.” My Morning Jacket finished the first encore by welcoming many of the musicians on hand at One Big Holiday for a super jam cover of Bob Dylan’s “Rainy Day Women #12 & #35” with over 20 performers on stage before returning with Preservation Hall Jazz Band to end the event with the fitting “One Big Holiday.”
