My Morning Jacket Performs Motown Covers Near Detroit

My Morning Jacket delivered a rescheduled concert at Meadow Brook Amphitheatre in Rochester Hills, Michigan near Detroit on Monday. Frontman Jim James and company nodded to the Motor City with a pair of Motown classics.

My Morning Jacket kicked off the show with “Regularly Scheduled Programming,” off their 2021 self-titled album. The first half of the main set also included favorites like “Feel You” and “I’m Amazed.” Following the latter, the band offered “If All Else Fails” from their 1999 debut LP, Tennessee Fire. From there, the band headed into the first Motown tune of the night in the form of Smokey Robinson & The Miracles’ “Ooo Baby Baby.”

MMJ continued with more classic original material in “Wordless Chorus,” “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2” and “Knot Comes Loose” before returning to their latest LP with “Least Expected.” The title track from the band’s 2011 album, Circuital, followed ahead of another My Moring Jacket cut, “Never In The Real World.” The favorite “One Big Holiday” came next ahead of “Gideon” from the band’s 2005 album, Z. MMJ closed out the main set with “Wasted.”

My Morning Jacket launched their four-song encore with the second Motown nod, a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” from the soul singer’s landmark 1971 LP, What’s Going On. Jim James also included elements of the album’s title track in “Mercy Mercy Me.” MMJ continued the encore with My Morning Jacket’s “Love Loe Love” ahead of the title track to the band’s 2008 album, Evil Urges. “Dancefloors” brought the evening to a close.
