Louisville rockers My Morning Jacket returned to the road on Thursday for the first of three shows to end the band’s 2017 Summer Tour. My Morning Jacket followed a similar gameplan to other summer performances with one major exception, a tribute to an artist who recently died.
Jim James & Co. kicked off Thursday’s show at EXPRESS LIVE! in Columbus, Ohio with a trifecta of “Circuital,” “I’m Amazed” and “Lay Low.” Fan-favorite “Mahgeetah” came next along with “Tropics (Erase Traces)” from the band’s most recent LP. James then strapped on an acoustic to lead a tribute to country legend Glen Campbell who passed away earlier in the week. “Gentle On My Mind” may have been written by John Hartford but is most closely associated with Campbell. Jim sang the cover and told the crowd “life goes fast” before completing “Gentle On My Mind.”
The rest of MMJ’s 17-song main set in Columbus featured a mix of material focusing on songs from the band’s last five albums. Included within was “Golden,” “Evil Urges,” “Dondante,” “Victory Dance” and more. James also led the group on his solo cuts “A New Life” and “State Of The Art (A.E.I.O.U.).” My Morning Jacket returned to the stage for a four-song encore of “Wordless Chorus” and “Off The Record” followed by “Touch Me I’m Going To Scream Pt. 2” and “One Big Holiday. Next up for the band is an appearance at the Peach Music Festival on Friday night.
