Mumford & Sons returned to Colorado’s famed Red Rocks Amphitheatre on Monday for the first time since 2012 to kick off a two-night stand at the venue. The band worked a rare cover of “Wagon Wheel” into last night’s setlist.
The trio — Marcus Mumford, Ted Dwane and Ben Lovett — assembled on a secondary stage set up within the audience at the iconic venue for three tunes towards the end of the concert. After performances of “Timshel” and “Reminder,” touring member Matt Menefee accompanied the threesome on banjo for “Wagon Wheel.”

Co-written by Bob Dylan and Old Crow Medicine Show’s Ketch Secor, “Wagon Wheel” was covered over a dozen times by Mumford & Sons between 2009 and 2012. The song then disappeared from the English band’s repertoire until lone performances in 2017 and 2019. Mumford & Sons rolled “Wagon Wheel” back out last year for plays at the March Madness and Greenwich Town Party festivals. The cover had been missing from setlists on the group’s current Rushmere Tour until this past Saturday night at Montana’s Under The Big Sky festival.
Mumford & Sons performed “Wagon Wheel” at Red Rocks while gathered around a single microphone. The crowd sang along with frontman Marcus Mumford and took over vocal duties at the end of the song.
