The 2018 installment of My Morning Jacket‘s One Big Holiday concluded on Monday night at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic. MMJ wrapped up the destination event with a performance that saw the band play each of their last three studio albums in their entireties as well as an encore that included their newest song and a second go at “One Big Holiday.” Over the course of the event, the Louisville rockers wound up performing all seven of their studio albums in the chronological order.
My Morning Jacket headlined the first night in the D.R. with performances of 1999’s The Tennessee Fire and 2001’s At Dawn. Then, on Saturday, Jim James & Co. reeled off 2003’s It Still Moves as the first set and 2005’s Z as the second set. After a night off, MMJ played 2008’s Evil Urges followed by 2011’s Circuital and 2015’s The Waterfall.
The group fit Circuital and The Waterfall into the second set of their three-and-a-half hour performance on Monday. Last night’s Evil Urges set featured the band’s first performances of “Thank You Too!” since December 27, 2012; “Sec Walkin” since October 23, 2010 and “Two Halves” since July 23, 2013. After an encore break, My Morning Jacket opened the encore with “Magic Bullet” – a single they released in July 2016. MMJ had only performed “Magic Bullet” once prior, this past New Year’s Eve in Bloomfield, Colorado. While the band had played “One Big Holiday” on Saturday as part of the It Still Moves set, they tackled the song once again as a fitting closer to the event which took its name from the tune. “One Big Holiday” has now closed out all four installments of the festival. Preservation Hall Jazz Band joined MMJ at various points of the event, including on both songs of the encore.
My Morning Jacket now begins a touring hiatus that is expected to last throughout the year.
