After coming out for “Happy Hour Hero” on Friday night at Red Rocks, Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Jake Cinninger reprised his role on Saturday by also sitting-in with moe. on one of their original songs. Night two saw Cinninger join moe. on a sizzling performance of “Opium.”
UM and moe.’s weekend at Red Rocks was loaded with collaborations. Along with the aforementioned “Happy Hour Hero,” at the end of Umphrey’s McGee’s first set on Friday, moe. bassist Rob Derhak replaced UM’s Ryan Stasik, while fellow moe. members – guitarist Al Schnier, and keyboardist Nate Wilson – joined a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking,” with moe. drummer Vinnie Amico and percussionist Jim Loughlin playing a giant cowbell.
Umphrey's McGee & moe. at Red Rocks Coverage
Saturday’s UM/moe. collabs at Red Rocks included “Opium” as well as Umphrey’s McGee guitarist Brendan Bayliss and keyboardist Joel Cummins joining moe. to cover “Down Under.” Bayliss and Cummins stuck around to help moe. close their set with their original “Rebubula.” The “Rebubula” came days shy of the anniversary of Bayliss joining moe. on the song at the inaugural Bonnaroo in 2002.
Additional Saturday sit-ins saw moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey joining Umphrey’s on an extended performance of their instrumental “Glory.” Garvey also accompanied UM on Saturday on Metallica’s “Enter Sandman” which also saw Amico and Loughlin getting in on the action.
Derhak, who sings lead, wrote “Opium” for moe.’s 2001 studio album, Dither. Watch moe. and Jake Cinninger dig into “Opium” at Red Rocks below:
