The past five years have been a turbulent time for moe. that has seen bassist Rob Derhak deal with personal loss and guitarist Chuck Garvey recover from a stroke. 2025 allows the band to commemorate their legacy and perseverance in full after the COVID pandemic derailed plans for their 30th anniversary celebration.
“In a nod to the band’s enduring resilience and musical evolution, Circle of Giants reflects on the journey of moe. through decades of highs and lows, bringing fans a fresh sound infused with introspective lyrics, masterful instrumentation, and dynamic energy,” as per a press release. All but one of the songs featured on Circle of Giants have been performed live, including “Living Again,” which was initially brought to the stage by moe. in 2001. “Beautiful Mess” has yet to be played in concert.
The first leg of moe.’s 35th Anniversary Tour begins on January 30, 2025 with the first of two shows at Portland, Oregon’s Aladdin Theater and is currently slated to end on March 10, 2025 at Charleston Music Hall in Charleston, South Carolina. The veteran jam band will bring the trek to Seattle, Crystal Bay (Nevada), Solana Beach (California), Los Angeles, San Francisco, Salt Lake City, Steamboat Springs (Colorado), Frisco (Colorado), Denver, Montclair (New Jersey), Philadelphia, Millvale (Pennsylvania), Charlottesville, Raleigh, Charlotte and Atlanta along the way.

Rob Derhak originally penned “Ups and Downs” for his solo pandemic album, Songs For Other People. moe. debuted the song live on July 14, 2023 in Jim Thorpe, Pennsylvania.
“Ups and Downs came about from an experiment I conducted during the pandemic in 2020,” explained Derhak. “There was a lot of uncertainty about our future, and the touring music business was especially uncertain. Stuck at home, and left to my own devices, I began working on my home digital recording setup.”
“I came up with the idea of trying to write songs for people, and ‘Ups and Downs’ was one of those songs,” Derhak added. “It began with a conversation and a story. A man wanted me to write a song for him that could help express his feelings for his wife and their relationship. He wrote an email about how they met, but what struck me most was when he said, ‘Like anyone else, we’ve had our ups and downs.’ Once I read that, my mind opened up, and I was able to draw from my own experiences in personal relationships, and thus, the song ‘Ups and Downs’ was born.”
