On Friday night moe. continued their four-night tour-opening run at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. The Buffalo-native band delivered a two-set show in the Grate Room that saw them once again joined by the venue’s proprietor for the opening frame.
The band began the night as they did on Friday with Phil Lesh on bass in lieu of Rob Derhak. The augmented ensembled dove headfirst into the classic pairing of “China Cat Sunflower” > “I Know You Rider,” delivering the debut of former with the latter being dusted off for the first time since March 30, 2000 – a span of over 18 years. Lesh then stepped up to sing lead on his quirky original “Pride Of Cucamonga” from the Grateful Dead’s 1974 release From The Mars Hotel. Guitarist Al Schnier handled vocals on an expansive “Shakedown Street” that mixed disco-funk with the band’s pattened two-guitar attack for a very moe.-esque jam. The psychedelic-tinged segment worked its way into “Viola Lee Blues” as the prison song saw action for just the third time ever after one-off takes in 1997 and 2003.
The busts outs continued as percussionist Jim Loughlin sang lead on Bob Dylan’s “Isis.” The track from Dylan’s 1976 release Desire had previously been attempted only once back in 2004 on moe.’s cruise. Derhak emerged next as the augmented act served up “Silver Sun,” a tune that was written and debuted at the band’s The Electric Lemoe.nade Acid Test show. The now six-piece ensemble brought their opening frame to a close with one more debut serving up Wilson Pickett’s “In The Midnight Hour.”

moe. delivered a guest-less second set that opened with a seamless run that saw them sandwich old-school favorite “Threw It All Away” in the middle of “Crab Eyes.” “Who You Calling Scared,” one of a handful of new tunes that were debuted earlier this year followed. Jam-vehicle “Meat” kicked off the back half of the stanza that saw them segue through “Ricky Marten,” “Time Ed” and “Head” before returning back to the tune to close things out. Fan-favorite “Spine Of A Dog” occupied the encore slot.
moe. returns to the Grate Room at Terrapin Crossroads on Saturday night. A webcast is available via nugs.tv.
