moe. returned to the Palace Theatre in Albany, New York over the weekend for a two-night stand that started on the fifth annual moe. Day. As reported, the City of Albany temporarily renamed the road that hosts the Palace as “moe.street” in honor of the occasion. The sextet brought out guitarist Suke Cerulo for a guest spot on Friday, while saxophonist Shannon Lynch and bassist Karina Rykman each added to a song on Saturday.
Albany City Treasurer Darius Shahinfar stood-in for Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan at both a ceremony outside the venue rechristening North Pearl Street as “moe.street” and reading a proclamation about the tribute at the start of Friday’s show. moe. — guitarists Chuck Garvey and Al Schnier, bassist Rob Derhak, percussionist Jim Loughlin, keyboardist Nate Wilson and drummer Vinnie Amico — then kicked off their first of two career-spanning shows by linking “Billy Goat” and “Bearsong.” The fierce “Crushing” came next along with the beloved “Blue Jeans Pizza.” Schnier then led the six-piece through “ATL” before the Loughlin-helmed “Don’t Wanna Be” gave way to “McBain.”

The “McBain” that closed Friday’s first set featured Suke Cerulo. Suke spent 2022 touring with moe. while Chuck Garvey recovered from a stroke suffered in November of 2021. “Again And Again” was selected to open the second set on moe. Day. Derhak then fronted the group on a 17-minute “Faker” that bled into an expansive “The Road” and high-octane “Water.” An adventurous pairing of “Downward Facing Dog” and “The Pit” sealed the frame. moe. ended the night with an encore featuring concise versions of “Letter Home” and “Captain America.”
Karina Rykman and her band served as support on Saturday. Rykman returned to the stage at the end of moe.’s first set to provide double-bass action on a wild “Meat” in which she went toe to toe with Derhak. The bassist’s guest spot came directly after the sextet was joined by old friend Shannon Lynch (Conehead Buddha) on saxophone for the classic “Happy Hour Hero.”
moe. went heavy on improvisation in delivering a four-song second set on Saturday. “Waiting For The Punchline,” “Kyle’s Song,” Puebla” and “Rebubula” each were jammed well past the 10-minute mark. More effusive jamming came within the evening’s “Plane Crash” encore.
The band resumes its winter tour at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville on March 9. View a full list of dates by scrolling below.
