Phish bassist Mike Gordon arrived in Nashville early before the band kicks off their fall tour tonight at Bridgestone Arena. Gordon swung by Robert’s Western World in Music City last night, where he made a surprise guest appearance with Timbo.
Robert’s Western World is famed honky tonk situated on lower Broadway known as “Nashville’s Undispitued Home of Traditional Country Music.” Gordon previously visited the establishment during Phish’s runs at Ascend Amphitheater in 2016 and 2021. The latter came while Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country were performing.

Mike Gordon is no stranger to honky tonks as his participation in the short-lived group Ramble Dove came from Brett Hughes’ weekly honky tonk jam sessions at Radio Bean in Burlington. Ramble Dove hit the road for a series of tour dates in 2006.
Nashville native Timbo and his band closed out the action last night at Robert’s Western World. Gordon took the stage with the group for three songs. First up was a variation of Bob Wills’ “Milk Cow Blues.” Timbo worked in references to Phish within the song.
“Man, y’all want to hear brother Mike Gordon sing us a song, don’t ya?” Timbo asked the crowd. Mike Gordon then led Timbo and his band through Hank Williams Jr.’s “Old Habits,” which he’d previously performed with both Leo Kottke and Trey Anastasio.
Gordon stuck around for one final song. Mike provided harmony vocals and played bass on a cover of “The Bottle Let Me Down” by Merle Haggard. “This is a huge honor, thank you very much,” Gordon said before he left the stage.
