Mike D 5D Performs ‘Make It Stop’ & ‘That’s Right’ Medley On ‘The Tonight Show’

Mike D brought his 5D band to The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday. The Beastie Boys co-founder led the group through a medley pairing “Make It Stop” and “That’s Right,” two songs featured on his recently released debut solo album, Thank You.

Mike D fronted a six-piece configuration featuring guitar, bass and drums along with three musicians stationed behind synthesizers and electronics. The ensemble moved directly from “Make It Stop” into “That’s Right” for the late-night television performance.

Thank You arrived August 28 through Capitol Records and marked the first full-length collection of new music from a Beastie Boys member since the trio released Hot Sauce Committee Part Two in 2011. The 13-track album grew out of informal sessions Mike D held at his home studio with his sons, Davis and Skyler Diamond, before additional collaborators were brought into the project.

Mike D returned with his debut solo single “Switch Up” in May. He subsequently previewed Thank You by performing “Switch Up” and “What We Got” during his debut appearance on Later… With Jools Holland.

The 60-year-old musician also sat down with Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday’s Tonight Show. Fallon brought up the 40th anniversary of Beastie Boys’ landmark 1986 debut album, Licensed To Ill, before the conversation turned to the late Dolly Parton.

Mike D recalled attending a birthday party for Parton with Beastie Boys bandmates Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Adam “MCA” Yauch. Mike explained that he was the only member of the trio who dressed up for the occasion and remembered arriving to find a guest list that included Burt Bacharach, Dionne Warwick and Bob Dylan.

Mike D went on to praise Parton and recalled attempting to engage Dylan at the party while dressed for the occasion. Watch Mike D tell the story and discuss Thank You with Fallon below:

Mike D 5D is currently touring in support of Thank You. The band concludes its initial East Coast run tonight at Knockdown Center in Queens before heading west later this month. Additional dates follow in October and November across North America, the United Kingdom and Europe.
