Michael Shannon & Jason Narducy Plot 2027 Tour Celebrating R.E.M.’s ‘Document’

Michael Shannon and Jason Narducy will mark the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s Document with a North American Tour in 2027. The pair and their band will play the album in full each night, along with a selection of other R.E.M. songs.

Drummer Jon Wurster, bassist John Stirratt, guitarist Dag Juhlin and keyboardist Vijay Tellis-Nayak will back Shannon and Jason Narducy on the 27-date tour that opens February 3 in Denver. The run then continues through the Pacific Northwest and California.

The Document tour moves east in late February with stops in Philadelphia, Washington D.C. and Boston, plus two nights in Brooklyn. Nashville, Minneapolis and Madison follow, ahead of a March 13 show in Chicago.

The run resumes in late April with additional California dates and then rolls into Austin, New Orleans and Atlanta. Included is a two-night return to R.E.M.’s hometown of Athens, Georgia in May, with additional stops in North Carolina and Virginia rounding out the newly scheduled dates.

“This is the album that introduced me to the band,” Shannon said of Document. “If you had told me when I was a kid that some day I’d get up on stage and perform it, I wouldn’t be able to comprehend, probably even believe, that… Feels like it was recorded yesterday to address the calamity of tomorrow…a pinnacle of songwriting and craftsmanship unseen beforehand and unmatched…that is until the next R.E.M. record, as always.”

“When I was 16, my friends and I drove from Evanston to Madison — probably looking for trouble,” Narducy said. “I walked into a record store and saw a new R.E.M. album on display. It was the first R.E.M. record I purchased. The first song was ‘Finest Worksong’ and I felt deeply connected to the music, the lyrics, the energy. I cannot wait to join the band to play these songs.”

The Document tour keeps up a series that began with a 2023 Chicago concert marking the 40th anniversary of R.E.M.’s Murmur, which grew into the pair’s first tour. Shannon and Narducy have since celebrated Fables of the Reconstruction and Lifes Rich Pageant on the road.

R.E.M. members sat in at both Athens shows on the Lifes Rich Pageant run, and Michael Stipe sang two songs at the tour’s Brooklyn stop.

Tickets go on sale October 2 at 10 a.m. local time.
