Michael McDonald Among Steely Dan Guests At The Beacon Theatre

Steely Dan played the penultimate concert of a nine-show residency at the Beacon Theatre in New York City on Monday night. The band was joined by a trio of guests, one of which was former contributor and a musical legend in his own right Michael McDonald.

Last night’s concert was one of two Steely Dan performances at the Beacon featuring full performances of Donald Fagen’s 1982 solo album The Nightfly. Fagen has slowly been adding songs from the LP into the Steely Dan repertoire since the death of Walter Becker last year. “Green Flower Street,” which was a staple of Steely Dan performances for the first few years after Walter and Donald reunited in 1993, was reinserted into the repertoire last October. “New Frontier” and “I.G.Y.” are also regularly played by the Dan. However, last night marked just the second-ever Steely Dan versions of “Maxine” and “Walk Between Raindrops.”

The instrumental “Hallelujah Time” broke up the concert from The Nightfly portion of the evening to the “plus select hits” segment. Steely Dan then made their way through a collection of beloved classics including “Bodhisattva,” “Hey Nineteen,” “Dirty Work,” and “Black Cow.” Woodstock-based guitarist Conor Kennedy augmented the Steely Dan band for most of the show. Then, Michael McDonald emerged towards the end of the set for “My Old School.” McDonald was a member of Steely Dan’s touring band in 1974 and made many memorable contributions to Steely Dan albums over the years such as adding his distinctive voice to “Peg” for 1977’s Aja. The Yacht Rock icon stuck around for the “Peg” set closer. Steely Dan returned for the encore with McDonald, Kennedy and guitarist Jimmy Vivino in tow for a guitar-heavy rendition of “Reelin’ In The Years” and the title track from 1974’s Pretzel Logic. Fagen and the guests said farewell as the rest of the band played Joe Williams’ “A Man Ain’t Supposed To Cry.” Watch a series of clips from last night’s show:
