Metallica, My Morning Jacket, Dave Matthews & Others Perform With Neil Young At Bridge School Benefit

As reported, yesterday marked the first of two Bridge School Benefit concerts held at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View, California. Host Neil Young was seen on stage performing with a number of acts on the lineup of the 30th annual acoustic event, including Metallica, My Morning Jacket, Dave Matthews, Norah Jones and Nils Lofgren, as well as Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters.

Metallica’s set featured several acoustic debuts and the bust out of “Hero of the Day” for the first time since 1999 and “Bleeding Me” for the first time since 2011. The metal legends also debuted a cover of “Clampdown” by The Clash and were joined by Young on their set closing cover of Buffalo Springfield’s “Mr. Soul.”

Young also emerged to support My Morning Jacket on their final song, a cover of his “Helpless.” MMJ also served as Waters’ backing band and played Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young” with Neil during the Pink Floyd founding member’s set. Vocalists Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig of Lucius were also part of Waters’ ensemble and they also sat-in on My Morning Jacket’s set during a take on “Tropics (Ease Traces).”

Singer-songwriter Norah Jones played three tracks from her recently issued album Day Breaks, including the single “Carry On.” She too was joined by Young for her final song, a rendition of his “Don’t Be Denied.” Longtime Young cohort and current E Street Band guitarist Nils Lofgren also collaborated with the Canadian rocker, teaming up once again on a version of “Believe.”

The night came to an end with a set Neil Young & Promise Of The Real featuring a Lofgren on a number of songs and Willie Nelson sitting-in before all of the performers including Matthews emerged for a “Rockin’ In The Free World” finale.
