The past year once again saw many of the world’s most beloved musicians pass away. This special New Year’s Day edition of Saturday Stream, two days later than usual, looks back at several of the performers we lost in 2017 with a Spotify Playlist sampling the outstanding recordings they left behind.
The Allman Brothers Band co-founders Butch Trucks and Gregg Allman are represented as are former Can band mates Holger Czukay and Jaki Liebezeit. Rock ‘n’ roll pioneers Fats Domino and Chuck Berry can be found along with revered jam scene patriarch Col. Bruce Hampton.
The playlist also highlights recordings by legendary “Funky Drummer” Clyde Stubblefield, hard rock icon Malcolm Young of AC/DC, Steely Dan co-founding guitarist Walter Becker, blues harp master James Cotton, The Screaming Eagle Of Soul Charles Bradley, synth innovator William Onyeabor and country superstar Glen Campbell. Acclaimed American rocker Tom Petty is also remembered.
The playlist has tracks representing co-founding ekoostik hookah member John Mullins as well Dark Star Orchestra tour manager and solo performer Matt Reynolds. Frontmen Chris Cornell of Soundgarden and Chester Bennington of Linkin Park are sadly part of this collection of performers we lost this year. The Tragically Hip’s Gord Downie, Hüsker Dü,’s Grant Hart, The Smithereens lead singer Pat DiNizio and J. Geils Band namesake guitarist J. Geils can be found on the playlist as well. There are also tracks featuring prog rock bassist John Wetton, fusion guitarists Larry Coryell and Allan Holdsworth and Prince drummer John Blackwell Jr.
Celebrate the lives and the music made by these wonderfully talented musicians in the playlist below:
