The National frontman Matt Berninger and Rosanne Cash convened for a reimagining of The Velvet Underground classic “Who Loves The Sun.” The cover is available to stream now and appears as the theme song for the new Hulu series Sunny Nights.

The show stars Will Forte and D’Arcy Carden. Sunny Nights is directed and executive produced by Trent O’Donnell (Hacks, No Activity, Colin from Accounts).

“I’ve been a Trent O’Donnell fan for a long time,” Matt Berninger stated. “We became good friends when he cast my brother, Tom, in an episode of his show No Activity, and we’ve had a close, creative bond ever since. When he asked me to cover the Velvet Underground for Sunny Nights, I immediately thought of it as a duet with Rose and John [Leventhal]. We recorded it in their Chelsea brownstone last summer. John did most of the work while Rose and I drank chardonnay in the garden in the sun.”

Sunny Nights premiered on Australian streaming platform Stan late last year with Berninger and Cash’s rendition of “Who Loves The Sun” featuring prominently in the first and episode and continuing as the theme song. “Who Loves The Sun” is the opener on The Velvet Underground’s excellent 1970 album, Loaded.
