Last night, Marcus King put together a special trio lineup of The Marcus King Band for the third of four Four Of A Kind livestream concerts originating from Nashville. The Marcus King Band Trio featured King on guitar, Stephen Campbell on bass and Jack Ryan on drums with Mastodon guitarist Brent Hinds serving as special guest.
The trio kicked off the show with “What’s Right” from The MKB’s Due North EP and then covered Mountain’s “Never In My Life.” Next up was the original “Virginia” featuring a taste of The Black Crowes’ “My Morning Song.” The three-piece continued on with “Honey” ahead of a take on Billy Cobham’s “Stratus” before jamming “Cherie Berry” into Chicago’s “25 Or 6 To 4” and Billie Holiday’s “Gloomy Sunday.”
Monday’s performance went heavy on covers including Willie Dixon’s “I Just Want To Make Love To You,” Sam Cooke’s “A Change Is Gonna Come” and an a capella rendition of Son House’s “Grinnin’ In Your Face.” Hinds emerged at the end of the show to augment the trio of covers of ZZ Top’s “Thunderbird” and Black Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral.” The Four Of A Kind series concludes next Monday with a guest-filled tribute to The Band’s The Last Waltz.
