Stephen Colbert revealed The Late Show will end after the 2025 – 26 season at the taping of Thursday’s episode. The installment moved forward as planned, with Noah Cyrus serving as the evening’s musical guest.

“The network will be ending The Late Show in May,” Colbert told the stunned audience at New York City’s Ed Sullivan Theater. “Yeah, I share your feelings. It’s not just the end of our show but it’s the end of The Late Show on CBS. I am not being replaced. This is all just going away,” Colbert said in reaction to the crowd booing.

CBS blamed economics for the decision. “We consider Stephen Colbert irreplaceable and will retire The Late Show franchise,” a statement from CBS executives noted. “This is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The Tiffany Network started The Late Show in 1993 with David Letterman as host. Colbert took over in 2015 after Letterman retired.

Noah Cyrus performed the fitting “Way Of The World” on last night’s Late Show. The song is featured on the vocalist and singer-songwriter’s new album I Want My Loved Ones To Go With Me, which came out last Friday, July 11.

Cyrus sang in front of a forest setting backed by a full band. The country-tinged “Way Of The World” has “Islands In The Stream” vibes. Ella Langley is featured on the studio version with Fleet Foxes and Blake Shelton also contributing to the sister of Miley and daughter of Billy Ray’s sophomore studio album.
