Lake Street Dive spent the last two nights performing at Thompson’s Point in Portland, Maine, with support from Sammy Rae & The Friends. Each sold-out show saw the two acts collaborate multiple times.
Both bands emerged out of the Northeast and are known for melding elements of pop, soul, jazz and rock into a style all their own. Lake Street Dive and Sammy Rae & The Friends have also showcased a knack for putting creative spins on a diverse array of covers.
Sammy Rae & The Friends recently released the album Songs We Wish We Wrote, which, as the name implies, consists solely of covers. One of the best tracks on the LP is the outfit’s take on the Billy Joel classic “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song).”
Lake Street Dive brought out Sammy Rae & The Friends for joint versions of “Movin’ Out (Anthony’s Song)” towards the middle of their sets at Thompson’s Point on Saturday and Sunday nights. Sammy Rae & The Friends and LSD performed the opening track from Joel’s landmark The Stranger album while gathered around a single mic set up in the center of the stage.

The encores for both concerts saw Sammy Rae and bandmates Will Leet, Debbie Tjong and C-Bass Chiriboga team with Lake Street Dive featuring the Huntertones Horns to perform Hall & Oates’ “Rich Girl.” Rae and LSD frontwoman Rachael Price joined voices in euphoric fashion on the 1977 hit, which has long been a part of Lake Street Dive’s live repertoire.
