Lords Of Lightning: King Gizzard & The Wizard Lizard Withstands ‘Supercell’ Storm & Delay To Rage Oregon

“I feel like it might be the most memorable for us on this whole tour. The weird shit’s gonna happen.” – Joey Walker

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s 2024 North American Tour hit the Pacific Northwest with a concert at McMenamins Edgefield Amphitheater in Troutdale, Oregon near Portland on Wednesday. The Australian rockers had to contend with some of the weather the region is known for when a deluge forced a delay during the first song.

Perhaps tempting fate a bit, King Gizzard opened the show in the rain with “The Dripping Tap.” The line sung by multi-instrumentalist Ambrose Kenny-Smith — “The dripping tap won’t be turned off by the gods up above us” — took on a literal meaning as the jam progressed and the rain got heavier. 13-minutes in, the band had to call it.

“Either we’re gonna get electrocuted and die or our shit’s gonna die,” Amby said as the band left the stage.

A little over 20 minutes later, KGLW returned and kicked things off with “Boogieman Sam” before heading into “Daily Blues” off their new record Flight b741. Another cut off the album, “Le Risque,” followed. Gizzard then got into their November 2017 record, Polygondwanaland, with “The Crumbling Castle” and “The Fourth Colour.”

Following the latter, John Gourley of Portland-based band Portugal. The Man came out and gave the band shots. Toasting the crowd, Joey Walker said, “Thanks for sticking it out, even though it’s gonna be weird, it’s gonna be a very good one. I feel like it might be the most memorable for us on this whole tour. The weird shit’s gonna happen.”

With a little liquid courage, the band jumped into Flight b741‘s “Sad Pilot” ahead of a five-song thrash sequence beginning with “Self-Immolate” off the August 2019 album Infest the Rats’ Nest. The song saw drummer Michael Cavanagh reeling off a solo which contained a “Moby Dick” tease.

A situationally appropriate “Supercell” from June 2023’s PetroDragonic Apocalypse launched a seamless sequence that also contained Rats’ Nest’s “Organ Farmer” along with PetroDragonic’s “Converge” and “Witchcraft.”

A segment from KGLW’s June 2017 LP, Murder of the Universe, came next with three songs in sequence beginning with the prologue tune “The Reticent Raconteur” followed by a fitting “The Lord of Lightning” and finally “The Balrog.” The latter was last played on March 20, 2023 for a gap of 85 shows, as per KGLW.net.

“The Balrog” bled into “Field of Vision” from Flight b741 to cap the eventful concert. Watch the complete show below:
