King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard kicked off a four-show residency at Pelham, Tennessee’s The Caverns on Thursday. The Australian rock band previewed their upcoming studio album, PetroDragonic Apocalypse, by debuting “Supercell” and performing lead single “Gila Monster” towards the end of their 16-song set at the underground venue.

Gizzard began what is billed as their lone trip to North America of 2023 by performing at the Boston Calling music festival this past Sunday, where they premiered PetroDragonic Apocalypse cut “Converge.” Last night marked the start of a series of multi-night runs at venues in four cities before King Gizz closes the trek at the famed Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on June 21.Thursday’s show was the first of two at the intimate subterranean space at The Caverns, which will be followed by a pair of back-to-back outdoor concerts at The Caverns Amphitheater on Saturday and Sunday. One night will see the band go unplugged for a rare acoustic set.

The sextet opened The Caverns run with the lengthy epic “The Dripping Tap,” the same song that launched their Boston Calling set. King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard then treated the capacity crowd to the seamless suite of “Robot Stop,” “Big Fig Wasp,” “Gamma Knife,” “People-Vultures” and “Mr. Beat.” The tunes were played in the exact order found on their 2016 studio album, Nonagon Infinity. “Mr. Beat” gave way to “Iron Lung” off last year’s Ice, Death, Planets, Lungs, Mushrooms and Lava LP.

After initally teasing “Hypertension” during “Iron Lung,” they went on to perform the Laminated Denim cut. Next, King Gizz threw back to 2014’s I’m In Your Mind Fuzz by ending the long and adventurous sequence with “Hot Water.” The ensuing run connected “Inner Cell,” “Loyalty” and “Horology” à la the band’s 12th studio album, 2017’s Polygondwanaland.

The first-ever “Supercell” came in the 13-slot last night at The Caverns. PetroDragonic Apocalypse, which will be released on June 16 through the band’s KGLW imprint, is filled with thrash-metal songs as the sonic sequel to 2019’s Infest The Rats’ Nest. “Supercell” had heads banging thanks to Cook Craig and Joey Walker’s wild guitar theatrics and bombastic drumming from Michael Cavanagh. Frontman Stu Mackenzie almost screamed the lyrics and joined in on the guitar shredding, while bassist Lucas Harwood anchored the new tune.
