King Gizzard & The Lizard’s tour supporting their new orchestral album, Phantom Island, kicked off with a concert featuring the band joined by The Chamber Orchestra of Philadelphia. Opening night at The Mann featured a complete performance of Phantom Island, followed by other songs from the prodigious band’s deep catalog.
The show began with the album’s opening title track, “Phantom Island,” introducing the performance. KGLW and the orchestra – conducted by Sarah Hicks – continued through the next nine songs on the album, in the same order as its tracklist. The Phantom Island songs were all live debuts except for the closing track, “Grow Wings and Fly.”
After completing the Phantom Island song-by-song recreation, King Gizzard played “The Dripping Tap,” which was the only selection of the night not to include the orchestra’s participation.
Rolling through additional KGLW originals with the orchestra, the set continued with “The River” (Parts I, II and IV), “Crumbling Castle” (with an outro for the first time), “This Thing,” “Mars For the Rich,” “Dragon” and “Iron Lung.”
King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard’s Orchestra Tour continues tomorrow, Wednesday, July 30 at the Westville Music Bowl in New Haven, Connecticut. Scroll on for videos of opening night at The Mann in Philly.
