Kevin Morby Announces New Album ‘Sundowner’ & Shares Single
The 10-track Sundowner follows Morby’s 2019 album, Oh My God. Morby wrote the songs on Sundowner after moving back to his hometown of Kansas City. His partner Katie Crutchfield (Waxahatchee) often visited Morby, staying for long periods of time. The pair coined the term “sundowners” for the shared feeling of melancholy they both often felt at sunset. Morby recorded demos of the songs that became Sundowner at home on a four-track Tascam model 424.
The new record was produced by Brad Cook and recorded in January 2019 at Sonic Ranch recording studio in Tornillo, Texas. Cook supplied some bass and keyboards, while Morby largely handled the rest of the instrumentation, playing lead guitar, mellotron and a pump organ. James Krivchenia was also brought in to add percussion parts.
“My end goal was to capture the cadence of what I had found inside the four track but make it three dimensional, and Brad seemed perfect for the job,” Morby stated. “It is a depiction of isolation. Of the past. Of an uncertain future. Of provisions. Of an omen. Of a dead deer. Of an icon. Of a Los Angeles themed hotel in rural Kansas. Of billowing campfires, a mermaid and a highway lined in rabbit fur. It is a depiction of the nervous feeling that comes with the sky’s proud announcement that another day will be soon coming to a close as the pink light recedes and the street lamps and house lights suddenly click on.”
Morby also detailed a weekly virtual livestream tour on Noon Chorus. Each performance will feature Morby playing one of his albums, beginning on Thursday, September 10, with his solo debut Harlem River. Subsequent Thursday evenings will feature Morby chronologically presenting an album from his solo catalog, culminating on Thursday, October 15 with a complete performance of Sundowner.
