Kacey Musgraves Returns To Roots On New Album ‘Middle Of Nowhere’ Featuring Willie Nelson, Billy Strings & More

Kacey Musgraves will release her sixth studio album, Middle Of Nowhere, on May 1 through Lost Highway. Musgraves accompanied the album announcement with the witty and provocative video for the LP’s first single, “Dry Spell,” she co-directed with Hannah Lux Davis.

Produced by Kacey Musgraves alongside longtime collaborators Daniel Tashian and Ian Fitchuk, the follow-up to 2024’s Deeper Well finds the Grammy-winning singer and songwriter taking inspiration from her homestate and tiny hometown of Golden, Texas. The 13-track project includes collaborations with Willie Nelson, Billy Strings, Miranda Lambert and Gregory Alan Isakov as Musgraves leans in on Texas-country flavor.

Kacey Musgraves wrote the majority of Middle Of Nowhere as she looked back with post-breakup clarity at the dissolution of a romantic relationship. Musgraves explained, stating:

“The bulk of this record was made during the longest single period of my life, and I found that for the first time, it actually felt incredible being alone and existing in a space not defined by anyone else. I became fascinated with the concept of liminal space, both geographical and emotional. We don’t linger in these transitional, empty spaces long enough and rush to define where or whatever is next. I became so at ease with being in the ‘middle of nowhere’ in many senses and sitting in the un-comfort of the undefined. I had a lot of time for creative ambling and leaning into myself in different ways; horses, humor, writing with my early collaborators again, and living out my very simple, inspired life between Texas, Tennessee, and Mexico.”

“Dry Spell” is the second track on Middle Of Nowhere. The country-leaning song sees Musgraves detail the number of days it had been since her relationship ended. “Ain’t nobody’s tool up in my shed. Ain’t nobody’s boots under my bed. Ain’t nobody’s truck up in my drive,” Kacey sings about the “Dry Spell” she experienced.
