Julien Baker & TORRES Unite For Country Album ‘Send A Prayer My Way’

The long-teased collaboration between Julien Baker and TORRES has finally come to fruition with the announcement of their debut album Send A Prayer My Way, set for release on April 18 via Matador Records.

The seeds of this unexpected country record were planted in 2016, when a casual comment after their first shared stage – “You know, we should make a country album” – sparked what would become an eight-year journey to its creation. Baker and TORRES (the pseudonym of Mackenzie Scott) initially previewed the project in December by sharing its lead single, “Sugar In The Tank,” and have now unveiled the song “Sylvia” from the LP.

Julien Baker is coming off the massive success of boygenius' 2023 album, The Record. The trio’s debut full-length album scored three Grammy Awards for Baker and bandmates Lucy Dacus and Phoebe Bridgers. TORRES released her sixth studio album, What An Enormous Room, in January 2024.

TORRES stated the following of the new single “Sylvia”:

“The morning I went to pick up my dog Sylvia from an upstate shelter, I was at home making my coffee and I turned on WFMU and Dolly Parton’s ‘Cracker Jack’ was on. I burst into tears—it felt like the universe was telling me she was going to be mine (Sylvia was only meant to be a foster). I remember thinking that I’d love to write a song like that, a song that people could feel in their chest within five seconds of turning on the radio, because anyone who has ever had the honor of sharing a home with a beloved pet knows that a pet is family—they’re the best friends you could ever have.”

“Sylvia” arrived with a video featuring original choreography by Stud Country co-founder Sean Monaghan, alongside star members of the Stud Country community, and directed by Caity Arthur. Watch the visual below:

The pair will bring the music of Send A Prayer My Way to several festivals in 2015. Julien Baker and TORRES are slated to perform at Big Ears, High Water Music Festival, Kilby Block Party, Mountain Jam, Zootown and Green River Festival.
