Joshua Redman Kicks Off Run With Umphrey’s McGee In Cleveland

By Scott Bernstein Jan 28, 2016 6:55 am PST

On Wednesday night Umphrey’s McGee began a run of shows with saxophonist Joshua Redman at the House Of Blues in Cleveland. Redman contributed to portions of both sets during his first performance of 2016 with Umphrey’s as part of a run that continues through Saturday in Kalamazoo, Michigan.

Umphrey’s started the first set without their guest for a sequence that included impressively jammed versions of “The Linear” and “Resolution.” The saxophonist emerged towards the end of the opening stanza to contribute to “Educated Guess” and “Glory” > “Wife Soup.” Redman returned to the stage following the “Mulche’s Odyssey” that kicked off the second set to add to both “Professor Wormbog” and “Ringo.” “Nemo” was up next and led into the first “Dear Lord” in 145 shows. The rare instrumental gave way to an old school style “Cut The Cable” before UM ended “Nemo.” A standalone “Nothing Too Fancy” brought the second set to a close. Umphrey’s then returned to encore with a cover of The Beatles’ “I Want You (She’s So Heavy).” The tour and run with Redman continues tonight in Madison, where Umphrey’s is expected to perform an entire set of improv.
