Last Friday, My Morning Jacket guitarist Carl Broemel issued a new solo album 4th Of July. The following night Broemel held a solo concert at The Basement East in Nashville that featured special guests John “JoJo” Hermann of Widespread Panic as well as William Tyler and others.
Broemel and his band featuring his MMJ mate Tom Blankenship on bass, Russ Pollard on drums, Adam Landry on guitar and Dan Mitchell on keyboards kicked off Saturday’s show with a main set that included several songs from 4th Of July, including the set opening “Sleepy Lagoon” and closing rendition of the title track which included guest vocals from Shelly Colvin. Guitarist William Tyler joined in mid-set on “Retired” and “Carried Away” from Broemel’s 2010 solo LP All Birds Say. He also helped out on a cover of “Sleep Walk” by Santo & Johnny. Broemel then delivered a pair of solo acoustic songs, including a cover of Talking Heads’ “Once In A Lifetime.”
The WSP keyboardist’s guest-spot was announced in advance of the show and occurred during the encore which started with a take on “Different People” from All Birds Say. JoJo, with Tyler also sitting-in on guitar, then took on covers of “Ooh La La” by Faces and Neil Young’s “Like A Hurricane.” Audience-shot video of portions of Saturday’s concert can be viewed below:
