John Mayer released “Tom And Jerry,” his first new solo single since his 2021 album Sob Rock. The song introduces Sob Rock Records, Mayer’s new label launched in partnership with Mercury Records, and reunites the guitarist with several longtime collaborators.
Mayer co-wrote and co-produced “Tom And Jerry” with Blake Slatkin. Recorded at Chaplin Recording Studios in Hollywood, the track features Mayer on vocals, acoustic and electric guitars, keyboards/synthesizer and programming. Serban Ghenea mixed the single, which was mastered by Randy Merrill.
The backing musicians include bassist Pino Palladino, drummer and percussionist Aaron Sterling, percussionist Lenny Castro and organist Larry Goldings. Palladino’s partnership with Mayer stretches back more than two decades through the John Mayer Trio. Sterling played on Mayer’s Born And Raised, Paradise Valley, The Search For Everything and Sob Rock albums.
Castro contributed percussion to Sob Rock, including its lead single “Last Train Home,” while Goldings’ recording history with Mayer includes Continuum and The Search For Everything. Slatkin also shared the stage with Mayer and Palladino earlier this year when they backed Ed Sheeran on “Drive” during a Jimmy Kimmel Live appearance alongside Dave Grohl and Rami Jaffee.
Mayer traced the new song’s origins to a recording on his phone.
“‘Tom and Jerry’ was the name I used when saving my first voice memo with this song idea,” Mayer wrote. “‘And if you ever come through, which I doubt you’ll do, I’ll run away with you.’ From that moment on, the adventure began in bringing that feeling to life.”
The single premiered Thursday on his SiriusXM channel, LIFE With John Mayer, ahead of today’s wide release. Announcing the Mercury partnership, Mayer said, “The path from creative vision to execution has never been easier or more rewarding. I feel very inspired, and I’m excited for what’s to come.”
Mayer will bring his solo, full-band and John Mayer Trio configurations to Las Vegas’ Sphere next April. The previously announced April concerts will feature all three formats each night.
