By Scott Bernstein Nov 17, 2017 12:08 pm PST

Guitarist John Mayer recently chatted with drummer/songwriter and producer Steve Jordan for his John Mayer Trio band mate’s Layin’ It Down With Steve Jordan radio show on SiriusXM. Mayer discussed trainwreck moments the Grateful Dead had and ones he has contributed to with Dead & Company as part of the interview.

John Mayer explained, “There are massive trainwrecks in Grateful Dead concerts and the people love them.” The guitarist talked about one with D&C, “I made a mistake somewhere in Boston, or at a stadium and I go into ‘St. Stephen’…and I just left off a whole four/six/eight bars, I just lost it. And I went ‘D’ah!’ You could hear me in the microphone know that I had totally…and the crowd went wild, like ‘welcome to the fold.'”

Mayer added, “They don’t care about perfection. They care that you’re taking them somewhere they didn’t take anywhere else. They care about discovery. They don’t care about mistakes.” Jordan chimed in with, “the songs have never been played the same twice anyway.” Mayer finished with, “The mistakes are the exhaust from the dream machine.”

Layin’ It Down With Steve Jordan featuring John Mayer will premiere on Tuesday, November 21 at 7 p.m. ET on SiriusXM’s Volume channel 106, with repeats scheduled throughout the month. SiriusXM’s Volume channel is the only 24/7 talk channel dedicated to the discussion of music–from the songwriting and performing, to artist influences and more.
