John Mayer began a three show solo acoustic tour across Asia on Wednesday in Mumbai, marking his debut in India. The concert at the Mahalaxmi Race Course saw the singer-songwriter and guitarist delivering a career-spanning set and breaking out a George Harrison cover.
Mayer launched the show with the staple “Slow Dancing In A Burning Room,” off his 2006 album, Continuum. Additional favorites performed in the set included “Love On The Weekend” (The Search For Everything 2017), “Queen Of California” (Born and Raised 2012), “Why Georgia” — off Mayer’s 2001 debut album Room For Squares — and “New Light” (Sob Rock 2021).
Following “In Your Atmosphere,” Mayer switched to piano for “You’re Gonna Live Forever In Me” and “Changing.” Picking up his guitar again, the singer-songwriter rolled through “Stop This Train” and “Something Like Olivia.” John then dusted off his cover of George Harrison’s “My Sweet Lord,” for the first time since 2008.
George adopted many spiritual practices of India in the mid-1960s while a member of The Beatles and studied sitar under his friend, the great classical Indian music master Ravi Shankar. In 1966, George said: “The people of India have a tremendous spiritual strength which I don’t think is found elsewhere. The spirit of the people, the beauty, the goodness–that’s what I’ve been trying to learn about.”
Following “My Sweet Lord,” Mayer delivered “Walt Grace’s Submarine Test, January 1967” followed by “Edge Of Desire” as the penultimate song of the concert. The guitarist then went electric for closer “Gravity.” Watch John Mayer’s debut in India below:
