Joe Russo’s Almost Dead Shares Official Audio Of Bend Show
The latest installment of Joe Russo’s Almost Dead‘s Taper Fridays series features official audio of the band’s performance at the McDonald Theatre in Eugene, Oregon on August 11. The Grateful Dead tribute act delivered a jam-heavy, four-song first set while the second frame was highlighted by a seamless stretch that opened with a Duo Jam and included a tune from The Band.
The evening got going with a bubbling, ethereal jam that melted into “The Wheel.” The nearly 21-minute take featured an avant-jazz-infused solo from keyboardist Marco Benevento and would segue straight into “Uncle John’s Band.” The Workingman’s Dead cut saw bassist Dave Dreiwitz take charge delivering a bass solo in its midst. Lengthy takes on Martha Reeves & The Vandellas’ Motown classic “Dancing In The Streets” and “Eyes Of The World” brought JRAD’s first set to a close.
The five-piece would open up their second stanza with a seamless stretch that began with a Tom Hamilton sung take on “Crazy Fingers.” The Blues For Allah selection crashed into “Estimated Prophet.” The Grateful Dead’s knotty ode to California was followed by the Americana rocker “Ramble On Rose.” The back half of the frame found Benevento and drummer Joe Russo locking in on a Duo Jam before dropping into “Yazoo Street Scandal.” The tune that originally appeared on The Basement Tapes worked its way into “Tennessee Jed.” The final stretch found JRAD dropping a brief take on “The Eleven” in the middle of “The Music Never Stopped.” Joe Russo’s Almost Dead unearthed their take on the blues standard “Good Morning Little Schoolgirl” for the first time 37 shows as their encore selection.
