Singer-songwriter Van William is currently in the midst of a residency at the Moroccan Lounge in Los Angeles. The three-show run served to promote the release of his full-length debut Countries, which hits stores this Friday and was billed to feature surprise special guests that would be revealed the morning of each gig. Last week William was joined by Fruit Bats and KERA. On Monday, Jim James to took social media to announce that he would the special guest for last night’s show along with Springtime Carnivore.
According to reports, the My Morning Jacket frontman’s opening set featured him playing the saxophone and performing a number of Nina Simone covers including her tribute to the civil rights leader Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., “Why? (The King Of Love Is Dead)”. James returned to the stage later in the evening as he teamed up with William and his backing band for a cover of Neil Young’s Cinnamon Girl.
William, who previously fronted Waters and Port O’Brien, will finish off his residency next week ahead of holding down the opening slot for First Aid Kit on their upcoming North American Tour. Watch audience-shot video of Cinnamon Girl and check out a pair of clips from James’ set below:
