On July 12, Round Records will issue GarciaLive Volume 11, November 11th, 1993 Providence Civic Center featuring a full concert from the Jerry Garcia Band. The Jerry Garcia Band’s performance of Bob Dylan’s “Simple Twist Of Fate” from the forthcoming installment of the GarciaLive Jerry Garcia live archival series has been premiered by Rolling Stone.
The Jerry Garcia Band’s Fall Tour 1993 was the group’s last East Coast tour. Garcia was backed by the long-standing JGB lineup of keyboardist Melvin Seals, bassist John Kahn, drummer David Kemper and vocalists Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch. The late Grateful Dead guitarist began performing “Simple Twist Of Fate” from Bob Dylan’s 1975 album Blood On The Tracks within a year of the LP’s release.

“Jerry always embodied the underlying story of the song with considerable emotion, and in this era the song also provided an opportunity for John Kahn to solo — on this version he plays with the rhythm, tempo and phrasing in his typically idiosyncratic way before Garcia’s guitar pulls the song together again for the home stretch,” wrote author Blair Jackson in the set’s liner notes as per Rolling Stone. Kahn’s bass solo on November 11, 1993 at the Providence Civic Center spanned over three minutes before Jerry took the Bob Dylan cover home with a breathtaking solo of his own.
