Jeff Tweedy performed songs from his upcoming album, Love Is The King, during a drive-in style concert at McHenry Outdoor Theatre in McHenry, Illinois on Friday. The Wilco frontman also fit in a number of covers from Neil Young, Mavis Staples and more.

Tweedy and his band — consisting of drummer Spencer Tweedy, guitarist James Elkington, bassist Liam Kazar and backing vocalists Sammy Tweedy and Sima Cunningham — kicked off the set with the Jewish prayer, “Mi Shebeirach,” ahead of “Bombs Above” and “Some Birds” from Tweedy’s 2018 solo album, WARM. Tweedy’s — Jeff Tweedy and his son Spencer Tweedy’s project — “New Moon” followed before Jeff got into material from Love Is The King with “Guess Again,” “Bad Day Lately,” “Gwendolyn,” “Opaline” and “Natural Disaster” with some Tweedy songs peppered in. The performance marked the first time Jeff took the Love Is The King songs for a ride in public with a full band.

For the second half of the set, Jeff delivered a number of covers beginning with a nod to the late Chicago singer Diane Izzo with “Love Like A Wire,” a song Tweedy has covered in the past. The group also put up two entries from Neil Young, “Old Country Waltz,” which was a live debut as per SetListFM, and “The Losing End” (When You’re On)” from Neil Young & Crazy Horse’s 1969 classic debut album, Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere. Pops Staples’ “Friendship” came next ahead of Sir Douglas Quintet’s “I Wanna Be Your Mama Again” and Doug Sahm’s “Give Back The Key To My Heart” before another Staples song, this time from Mavis, with “You Are Not Alone” from the legendary singer’s 2010 album of the same name. The Billy Bragg/Wilco collaboration “California Stars” — with posthumous lyrics by iconic troubadour Woody Guthrie — came ahead of the set closer, “Save It For Me” from Love Is The King.
