Jason Isbell & The 400 Unit Dust Off Warren Zevon Cover At The Ryman

Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit delivered the fifth concert of their eight-show residency at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville on Wednesday. Isbell and company brought back their cover of Warren Zevon’s “Mutineer” during the encore.

The show got underway with “Go It Alone” from Isbell’s second LP with The 400 Unit, 2011’s Here We Rest. Next up came “Hope The High Road” from the group’s 2015 album, The Nashville Sound. Although the band would play four songs from their latest studio album of original material, 2020’s Reunions, The 400 Unit perhaps fitting pulled five songs from The Nashville Sound including “If We Were Vampires,” “Last of My Kind,” “Something To Love” and “White Man’s World.” The set also featured a cover of Cat Power’s “Cross Bones Style” and original staples like “24 Frames,” “Stockholm” and set closer, “Cover Me Up.”

To kick off the encore Isbell led his band through a bust out of Zevon’s “Mutineer,” appearing on the legendary singer-songwriter’s 1995 album of the same name. As per SetlistFM, Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit last played “Mutineer” at the Ryman on October 27, 2018, nearly three years ago to the day. “Mutineer” was performed by the Alabama native and his wife/400 Unit bandmate Amanda Shires last year sans audiences at Brooklyn Bowl Nashville and Carter Vintage Guitars. Jason Isbell would bookend the concert with another Here We Rest cut, “Codeine.”
