On Saturday, Grand Point North, the two-day festival curated by Grace Potter, got underway at the Waterfront Park in Burlington, Vermont. Day one of featured performances from the likes of Mt. Joy, Darlingside, Ani DiFranco and Jackson Browne. Potter brought the evening to a close with a headlining set and a memorable encore that saw her welcome special guests Kenny Chesney and Browne.

After an introduction from U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders, Potter led her band through a career-spanning mix of originals that featured selections from her albums with The Nocturnals as well as her solo efforts. Towards the back half of her 16-song main set, country music superstar Kenny Chesney made a surprise appearance to duet with Grace on “You And Tequila.” Chesney and Potter originally recorded a version of the song together for his 2010 release Hemingway’s Whiskey.

Potter had more surprises up her sleeve during her extended encore as she teamed up with Browne for a string of tunes. The legendary singer-songwriter stepped up to sing lead on John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” with Potter providing backing vocals. Next, they looked to Browne’s songbook for “Doctor My Eyes” from his 1972 self-titled release. The ad-hoc ensemble then reached for one from Browne’s longtime friend the late Warren Zevon serving up “Lawyers Guns And Money.” Chesney emerged next, as the collective closed out the night with an exuberant singalong version of Browne’s “Running On Empty.”
