Houndmouth will issue their first album in five years, Lordy, on July 10 via Dualtone Records. Primary songwriter Matt Myers previewed the Brad Cook-produced album with “Tiger Blood” and the title track.
The new Houndmouth record sees guest spots from Iron & Wine's Sam Beam, MJ Lenderman and Phil Cook. Phil’s brother Brad Cook helmed the album, as well as Houndmouth’s 2021 LP Good For You, and was instrumental in encouraging Myers as he experienced doubt about the songs he was writing.
“When I visited [Brad] in North Carolina for the first time, he walked out of his garage and gave me a big bear hug,” Myers recalled. “He told me he was happy for me, and he gave me a lot of confidence with my new songs.”
Myers also took a more stream of conscious approach in the studio.
“I would go to Brad’s studio, play a new song, and we’d do a one-take performance on the acoustic guitar,” Myers said. “Then we’d get other people to come over and play on it, too. I told myself not to get lost in the mechanics or the minutia. If I had an idea, I just wanted to record it as quickly as I could. That was the primary objective: to let whatever’s gonna come out, come out.”
Lordy also sees contributions from Houndmouth keyboardist Caleb Hickman. The band previewed the record today with “Tiger Blood” and “Lordy.” Listen below:
