Northern California’s Hot Buttered Rum will soon hit the studio to record a series of three 5-song EPs. The band is asking fans for support through a newly launched PledgeMusic Campaign.

“This is the first time we’ve asked our circles to support us financially at the outset of a project. We thought a lot about this and I really believe in the crowd-funded model. It’s certainly better than the record company model where you can end up compromising artistic control, or borrowing a bunch of money, which is expensive and stressful. It’s always more fun to be part of the creation of something, and we’re inviting our circles to contribute and participate in our process in small or large ways. We put a lot of effort into creating activities and artifacts that we think will be fun to do and have, so I think -and hope! -that folks will step up,” guitarist/vocalist Nat Keefe noted in a press release.

HBR plans to release each EP as one separate download, and together on one disc at the culmination of the project. The band has selected a specific musical theme and producer for each of the three EPs. “We want to give our people a lot to listen to, and to challenge ourselves to up our game.” added Keefe.

Up first will be a collection of down-tempo acoustic encore songs produced by Tim Carbone of Railroad Earth. HBR has tenative plans to release the Carbone-produced EP in November.

Then, Hot Buttered Rum will record songs from bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley for the second EP, which will be produced by Sally Van Meter. Van Meter’s bluegrass resume includes working with the likes of Yonder Mountain String Band, Leftover Salmon, Laurie Lewis and many others. Look for the second EP to drop in January 2016 if all goes according to plan.

Finally, the third EP will feature “Latenight” dance music produced by Kyle Hollingsworth of The String Cheese Incident. The Kyle-produced EP is currently slated for release in March 2016. Head here for more info or to contribute towards the project.
