Hiss Golden Messenger assembled behind the trading post at the scenic Red Rocks Amphitheatre near Denver to film a “Red Rocks Trail Mix” session. Bandleader MC Taylor is joined by Chris Boerner on guitar and Nicholas Falk on drums for the three-song acoustic performance.

Taylor leads Falk and Boerner on “Sanctuary” from the 2021 Hiss Golden Messenger album Quietly Blowing It to get the cozy set underway. The session was captured on September 15, 2022 while the group was at Red Rocks opening for The Head And The Heart.

“The second song is called ‘I Need A Teacher,'” Taylor then noted before a performance of said tune. “That song appeared on a record called Terms Of Surrender that came out in 2018. Initially I wrote that song at a time when I was wishing there was a road map for the parts of life that there is no map for. Wishing that was some sort of guidance for the stuff that can feel so confusing in life.”

MC Taylor went on to discuss his songwriting process. “Sometimes I’m listening for something rhythmic, sometimes I’m listening for some little part of the world that could become the kernel for a song,” the North Carolina-based musician said. Hiss Golden Messenger looked back to 2016’s Heart Like A Levee for “Say It Like You Mean It” to close the session.
