While around town celebrating St. Patrick’s Day today, chasing your next Guinness and plate of corned beef, there’s a good chance you’ll hear a version of the traditional Irish folk song, “Whiskey In The Jar.” The tune was first popularized by Irish folk group The Dubliners when they released it as a single in 1968. It was Thin Lizzy’s 1972 rocked out rendition that catapulted the song into the mainstream and became the band’s signature hit. It’s since been covered by such varying artists as Jerry Garcia & David Grisman, U2, Belle & Sebastian and Metallica, among many others. Below are three live versions of “Whiskey In The Jar,” performed by The Dubliners, Thin Lizzy and Metallica for your St. Patrick’s Day listening pleasure.
