The great Sly Stone was born in Denton, Texas on this date in 1943. Stone is a funk pioneer who founded and led the Rock & Roll Hall Of Fame act Sly & The Family Stone. The ahead-of-its-time group mixed elements of many different genres of music during its late ’60s and early ’70s heyday and crafted such iconic hits as “Stand!,” “Thank You (Falettinme Be Mice Elf Agin),” “Everyday People,” “Hot Fun In The Summertime” and “Sing A Simple Song.” While Stone turned into a recluse in recent decades, his music is still influencing many musicians who have come in Sly’s wake.
The multi-instrumentalist appeared both with his band and without on multiple episodes of The Mike Douglas Show in 1974. In July, Sly & The Family Stone delivered a potent version of “I Want To Take You Higher”:
