Late great soul singer Marvin Gaye would have celebrated his 77th birthday today had he not been tragically murdered by his father one day before what would have been his 45th birthday in April 1984. Though his career was cut short, the mark he left on music and American culture is undeniable. His pure vocals and easily definable style set him apart as one of the most talented singers on the Motown Records label and later this year he will be posthumously inducted into the Songwriters Hall Of Fame. In remembering the legend today, here’s an attempt to spotlight that amazing singing voice via a collection of five isolated vocal tracks.

Below you’ll find isolated vocals of Gaye from recordings of his classic hits “Let’s Get It On,” “I Heard It Through The Grapevine,” “What’s Going On,” “Sexual Healing” and “I’ve Got My Music.” Haunting at times, sensual and gritty at other moments, but all around incredibly impressive, the essence of Marvin Gaye is clearly on display in these five tracks. Give them a listen:
